Welcome
The Greene Scholars Program (GSP) was founded in 2001 by Debra Watkins, while she was president of the Santa Clara County Alliance of Black Educators to help youth of African ancestry successfully complete higher STEM education and serve as positive role models and contributors to their communities. Named after Dr. Frank S. Greene Jr., a pioneering African American scientist who was one of the Bay Area’s first African American venture capitalists, the GSP fosters a community of college-bound Scholars focused on developing their academic gifts. As a long-term K-12 initiative, the Greene Scholars Program is designed to develop 21st century leaders with strong science/mathematics backgrounds coupled with innovation, entrepreneurial/leadership and problem solving skills. The GSP primary goal has been to increase the success rate of African American students in STEM course work and to increase the number of students choosing STEM career paths.
The Opportunity
Silicon Valley's innovative economy is dependent on a labor force that is grounded in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), analytical reasoning and communication skills. However, the pressure facing Silicon Valley is no longer solely producing products, but producing enough scientists and engineers to maintain the evolving pace that technology demands. Students need access to enrichment opportunities that provide engaging experiences to expose them to career path options, the workplace, and innovation in technology. The Greene Scholars Program anticipates contributing to the pipeline of knowledge-based, technical workforce needed to extend Silicon Valley’s economy.
Achievement Gap Closed
The GSP has closed the achievement gap. You read it right! GSP sends 100% of those who successfully complete the program to college. This means that ALL of our students have passed the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE), met the University of California's 'A-G' requirements for college admission, and graduated from high school. The majority of our students enroll in the GSP while in elementary school. As a model program for California and the country, Scholars and parents participate in academically engaging monthly meetings. Scholars network and collaborate on projects, while parents receive best practices and strategies for engaging and motivating their children. In addition, parents commit to volunteer service and perform a minimum of four hours monthly. Each parent performs specific roles in the organization until their Scholar graduates from high school. We currently have 95 Scholars in 3rd-12th grade in the program, and 45 alumni.
